Montreal and New York City, December 15, 2010 – Movember (a combination of Mo, slang for moustache and November) challenges men to change their appearance and the face of men’s health by growing a moustache.
In Canada alone, over 4,000 men die from prostate cancer each year. This Movember many of the Rideau men donated their faces to raising awareness about prostate cancer. Under the leadership of Michael Girgis, they formed a team called the Recognistaches. As a result of the Recognistaches efforts, Rideau is proud to donate a total of $8,052.00 toward finding a cure for this deadly disease that affects one in six men.
Starting Movember 1st the men were clean-shaven and then grew moustaches for the entire month. During this campaign, the moustache became the ribbon for men’s health, the means by which awareness and funds were raised for the number one cancer affecting men—prostate cancer. Much like the commitment to run or walk for charity, the men of Movember committed to growing a moustache for 30 days.
