Presagia Announces New Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) Intermittent Monitoring Tools

Montreal, Canada, June 17, 2013 – Presagia, the leading developer of Software as a Service (SaaS) absence management solutions, announced today that it has introduced innovative features to Presagia Enterprise and SimplyLeave to help employers better manage intermittent leave under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA). This type of leave is particularly costly and complex, as it permits employees to take periodic, unscheduled absences for a wide range of unpredictable issues including migraines, diabetes and asthma.

In a recent survey conducted by the Disability Management Employer Coalition (DMEC) and Spring Consulting Group, managing intermittent leave was ranked number one among challenging leave management tasks. The same study found that when ranking FMLA activities, tracking intermittent time previously taken and tracking intermittent time during leave were the top two most difficult issues. As it is complex and unpredictable by nature – employees can even have multiple open cases – it’s no surprise that employers continue to struggle with the proper certification, administration and monitoring of intermittent leave. Intermittent leaves may be taken under the federal FMLA and in all 12 states with more generous Family and Medical Leaves.

Within the latest release, the system now actively monitors all intermittent leave cases for absence patterns. If the system detects that an employee’s usage seems out of the ordinary, it will immediately alert the case manager. This real-time automated monitoring provides employers with an edge in the battle to better manage this costly type of absence.

“We’re really happy with the enhancements we’ve been able to incorporate into this latest release,” says Alain Bienvenue, Presagia’s Software Development Team Lead. “It’s simply too hard for employers to constantly review open intermittent cases every time an employee takes an absence so we figured, let’s make the technology do the automatic monitoring for them.”

Once notified, users can run the Intermittent Analysis Tool which displays all absences in a color-coded calendar format that provides a clear, visual overview of the employee’s attendance patterns. The system will also calculate the statistical probability that the intermittent absences taken exceed the approved frequency and, if statistically relevant, it will display the probability of uneven distribution based on the week day.

“Intermittent leave has consistently been a top pain point for employers,” explains Donald Olds, Presagia’s CEO. “We wanted to take our system further than just allowing employers to enter certified frequency and durations. We wanted to give them automated features to take some of the guesswork out of managing intermittent leaves and in doing so, curb potential abuse. This new release achieves that and more.”

The latest release of Presagia Enterprise and SimplyLeave includes a more formal review process for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), a federal law with a close interplay with the FMLA. There are also enhancements to the management of the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA).
