Two local Girl Scouts have been awarded the prestigious Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting, for projects addressing critical community needs. Lilly Nguyen of Boca Raton and Ronica Deshmukh of Delray Beach were recognized for their initiatives focused on CPR education and Asian representation in media, respectively.
Nguyen's project, 'Heart to Heart,' aimed to combat heart disease by providing free CPR training to high school students and community members. Recognizing that lack of access and awareness often prevents people from learning CPR, Nguyen conducted hands-on training sessions and created online resources, including a website and social media platforms, to extend her reach. Her efforts have empowered individuals with life-saving skills, potentially reducing mortality from cardiac emergencies.
Deshmukh's project, 'Shattering Stereotypes: Empowering Asian Voices in Media,' addressed the underrepresentation and typecasting of Asian professionals in creative industries. Through interviews with successful Asian media figures, she highlighted the challenges they face and the importance of authentic representation. Her work, shared via social media and a YouTube channel, has sparked conversations about breaking cultural norms and pursuing creative passions.
The Gold Award recognizes Girl Scouts who demonstrate exceptional leadership and commitment to solving community problems. Nguyen and Deshmukh are among 27 young women in the region to receive this honor in 2025. The program is supported by sponsors including Amazon and Publix Super Market Charities, underscoring the value placed on youth-led community impact.
For vendors in the human resources industry, these achievements highlight the growing importance of community engagement and diversity initiatives. Companies seeking to attract and retain talent may look to support similar youth programs as part of their corporate social responsibility strategies. Additionally, the projects underscore the need for CPR training in workplace safety programs and the value of diverse representation in media and marketing efforts.
The Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida continues to empower young women to make a positive difference. More information about their initiatives can be found at https://www.gssef.org.
