The Military Spouse Advocacy Network (MSAN) has announced a new Mental Health Ally Certification program, designed to address the pressing mental health needs of military spouses. Presented by USAA and developed in partnership with Psych Hub, the certification is now available to active participants in MSAN's mentorship program, expanding beyond previous volunteer-only access.
The initiative comes in response to a recent member survey that revealed significant mental health challenges among military-connected spouses. According to the survey, 82% of respondents reported that challenges associated with being a military spouse have affected their mental health or overall wellness. Additionally, 93% believed that military spouses and families require additional mental health support, while 96% stated they would benefit from mental health training and resources.
To qualify for the Mental Health Ally Certification, participants must meet six requirements, including active involvement in the Mentorship HUB and regular communication with an assigned mentor. More information about eligibility and the certification process is available on the MSAN Mentorship HUB website.
Participants will gain access to Psych Hub's evidence-based professional training, which includes a library of over 1,000 digital assets such as short videos, shareable content, and podcasts. The training aims to create a more compassionate and mentally fit volunteer force to support military families.
Verenice Castillo, MSAN Founder & CEO, emphasized the initiative's importance: "The intent of these certifications is to support military spouses, their families, and their communities as a whole. We are building an army of first emotional responders that will bring immediate and long-term impact. The mental health allies will fill the gap between the moment a military spouse needs support and the time they receive professional services."
The certification program is announced in celebration of National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month and aligns with MSAN's mission to create stronger military families through education, empowerment, and support. The organization's Military Spouse Mentorship-HUB connects military families from all branches of the Armed Forces and their surrounding communities worldwide.
For HR vendors serving the military community, this development signals a growing demand for mental health resources and training. The program's focus on peer support and evidence-based training may influence how vendors design employee assistance programs and wellness initiatives for military-affiliated workforces. As mental health awareness continues to rise, such certifications could become a key differentiator for organizations supporting military spouses.
By equipping more military spouses with mental health knowledge and skills, MSAN aims to improve morale, increase military retention, and foster a stronger sense of community among military families. The Mental Health Ally Certification represents a significant step in addressing the unique challenges faced by this population.
