Top motivational speaker and bestselling author Rocky Romanella is challenging leaders to refocus on humanity in the age of artificial intelligence. In a recent newsletter, Romanella argued that while AI can produce, it cannot lead, and that the future belongs to leaders who lead with heart and soul.
"AI is everywhere—in our headlines, our boardrooms, our classrooms, and our conversations. It is reshaping industries, accelerating decisions, and redefining how work gets done. But for all its power, AI still lacks the two things that have always moved people, teams, and organizations forward: A heart. And a soul," Romanella wrote.
Romanella's keynote, titled "The Heart and Soul of AI," is designed to remind leaders that people, not algorithms, are the true engine of progress. He argues that AI can analyze data but cannot create meaning, generate options but not belief, and automate tasks but not build trust. "It cannot inspire a team on the brink of burnout. It cannot look someone in the eye and say, 'I believe in you.' It cannot build a culture where people feel seen, valued, and understood. Only leaders can do that. Only people can do that," he stated.
Drawing on a personal story, Romanella recalled when his wife, Debbie, was asked which of their children was her favorite. She replied, "They all are, because everyone gets what they need when they need it." Romanella noted that this answer was a masterclass in leadership—understanding people as individuals and meeting them where they are. That moment reshaped how he led teams and built organizations, and he believes it is exactly the kind of leadership the AI era demands.
Romanella, who started his career with clipboards and carbon paper and lived through barcodes, automation, and digital transformation, sees a generation entering the workforce waiting for AI to define them. "That paralysis convinces people to wait instead of act, to fear instead of grow, and to surrender control of their future instead of owning it," he said. Leaders must have the courage to bring the heart and soul back into the conversation.
Central to Romanella's message is the concept of AIAI—"Am I All In?"—which he describes as the internal operating system leaders need when AI handles the tactical and humans elevate the strategic. The keynote introduces three questions every leader must master: What is the issue or opportunity? How do I get my team aligned and committed? How do I turn intent into business results?
