The financial advice profession is facing a dual transition that could reshape the industry. Over the next two decades, an estimated $124 trillion will transfer between generations, marking the largest intergenerational wealth transfer in American history. Simultaneously, more than one-third of today's financial advisors are expected to retire within the next decade, putting client relationships, institutional knowledge, and business ownership in flux. With industry experts projecting a shortage of about 100,000 financial advisors by 2034, the question of who will guide families through retirement and wealth planning has become urgent.
To address these challenges, the Association of African American Financial Advisors (Quad-A) will host the 2026 VISION Conference: The Wealth Shift: Ownership, Legacy & the Next Era, scheduled for September 10–12 in Washington, D.C. The event, to be held at the JW Marriott Washington, DC, will gather more than 600 financial advisors, wealth management executives, asset managers, RIAs, corporate partners, policymakers, and students. The conference will focus on ownership, leadership, and the future of financial advice, featuring nationally recognized voices including civil rights attorney Ben Crump and sports broadcaster Stephen A. Smith.
“The wealth shift happening in American families is also happening inside advisory firms,” said Sheena Gray, CEO of Quad-A. “Ownership, leadership, and client relationships are all changing hands at once. Our responsibility isn't simply to prepare the next generation of financial advisors—it's to prepare the next generation of firm owners, entrepreneurs, and industry leaders who will define what this profession looks like for decades to come. That's the work Quad-A is here to do, and VISION is where those conversations spark action.”
As Quad-A marks its 25th anniversary, the conference highlights both the organization's legacy and its forward-looking mission. For a quarter century, Quad-A has worked to expand opportunity, cultivate leadership, and increase access to trusted financial guidance. The 2026 VISION Conference is designed to tackle pressing issues such as succession planning and increasing enterprise value, independent firm ownership and entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence and the future of financial advice, wealth transfer and legacy planning, public policy and advocacy, and recruiting and mentoring the next generation of advisors.
The implications for the human resources and talent management sectors are significant. With a large portion of the advisory workforce retiring, firms will need to implement robust succession planning and talent development strategies to ensure continuity. HR vendors and industry stakeholders should pay attention to the conference's focus on mentorship and building future leaders, as these efforts will directly impact workforce readiness and retention. Additionally, the integration of AI and technology into financial advice will require new skill sets, making HR's role in upskilling and reskilling critical.
The conference presents an opportunity for HR professionals and vendors to understand emerging trends in the financial advisory workforce. By addressing the intersection of demographic shifts and technological change, Quad-A is setting a precedent for how other industries might handle similar transitions. The insights shared at VISION 2026 could inform HR practices beyond financial services, particularly in areas like diversity, equity, and inclusion, and leadership development.
