SAN JOSE, Calif. / March 16, 2010 — Using six key leadership skills, Glowan Consulting Group’s new Smart Skills™ program transforms project managers into high-performance project leaders.
A series of six tele-seminars, The Art of Project Leadership course is designed for professionals who desire the skills to build, lead and manage project teams. The leadership seminars are rooted in action learning and utilize self-assessments, 360 feedback, coaching and mentoring both individual and peer groups, educational tips, practical cases studies and a toolkit for ongoing development.
The six Smart Skills consist of:
-Emotional intelligence
-Influencing with integrity
-Interest-based negotiation
-Stress and change management
-Appreciative inquiry
-High-level communication skills
“Acquiring theses skills allows a manger to exercise influence without authority, stay emotionally intelligent in the face of ongoing challenges, use negotiation skills, and monitor and control project performance,” said Marc Michaelson, co-principal of Glowan, a recognized name in leadership development and executive coaching. “They also learn to focus on the bigger picture — how project objectives link to the company’s business outcomes.”
Michaelson noted many project managers lack three essential leadership skills that engage people and drive change: they don’t see themselves as leaders able to influence outcomes; they don’t associate their role with corporate competencies; and most leadership coursework they experience is limited to only tactical skills. The Glowan tele-seminar series is designed to build the critical leadership skills that project management professionals and managers need to engage key people, drive change, and focus on greater business outcomes.
“Anyone can learn the textbook skills and science of great leadership . . . the art form is far more difficult to develop in people,” according to a senior director of a PMO at a major technology company. “The Smart Skills program is unique in targeting key competencies that map to the `art’ of project management, as well as business management. Leaders emerge and resources grow through coaching and mentoring.”
“By participating in the Smart Skills program, managers can access the true success factors of high-performance project management,” said John Anderson, co-principal of Glowan Consulting. “Smart Skills include personality traits, social graces, communication, personal habits, optimism and more. The most effective project leaders know how to manage the human dimension of project management and can exercise their own power, influence, and authority to ensure the success of projects.”
