Carewise Health Volunteers Fight Childhood Obesity

Scottsdale, AZ, April 28, 2010 – SHPS announced today that members of its Carewise Health team will be volunteering their time to help fight childhood obesity at the Horseshoe Trails Elementary School. Carewise Health provides employee health programs to mid- and large-sized employers across the nation.

Carewise Health team members will speak to students in grades kindergarten through five, and provide educational materials on nutrition, exercise, and making health choices in accordance with the Arizona state nutritional standards at the school’s field day event on April 30.

Childhood obesity or excess weight threatens the health future of one-third of American children, and $150 billion is spent each year to treat obesity-related conditions. Obesity rates among children have tripled in the last 30 years, a trend that signals for the first time in American history that children face a shorter life expectancy than their parents.

“We are extremely excited to team up with the Let’s Move organization and Action for Healthy Kids. Our Carewise Health programs recognize the need for healthy living, and we appreciate the opportunity to put theory into practice at this very special event,” said Jamie Hall, Senior Vice President of Sales for Carewise Health. “We understand that childhood obesity will continue to threaten future generations unless we all work together for a solution – and this a great opportunity for our team to live our mission.”

In addition to learning about proper nutrition and exercise from Carewise Health personnel, students will be the recipient of the Mini Recharge Kit, a program of eight physical and educational events developed and co-branded by the NFL. The Mini Recharge Kit offers students fun, entertaining activities and physical challenges, followed by a cool-down station, refreshments, and fruit tasting.

Partnering with the Carewise Health team are volunteers from the local chapter of Action for Healthy Kids, the nation’s leading non-profit and largest volunteer network fighting childhood obesity and undernourishment and Let’s Move, an organization dedicated to solving the childhood obesity epidemic within a generation. Let’s Move features First Lady Michelle Obama as its spokeswoman.
