Talent is in Demand at U.S. Healthcare Organizations
Kansas City, Kan., June 23, 2010 — With baby boomers entering their senior years and many parts of the healthcare legislation already going into effect, the need for healthcare workers has never been greater. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that many jobs in the healthcare industry will be among those with the largest growth between 2008 and 2018, with registered nurses and home health aides topping the list. The newly released 2010 Compensation Data Healthcare survey results show staff nurses currently earn $61,700 annually. This reflects an increase of 6 percent since 2008.
“Despite the economic hardships many organizations are now facing due to the recession, the demand for healthcare continues to increase,” said Amy Kaminski, director of marketing for Compdata Surveys, the nation’s leading compensation and benefits survey data provider. “In an economy where most industries are reporting pay increase budgets of two and a half percent or less, high demand positions in healthcare have seen salary increases of six to ten percent over the last two years.”
Home health aides have seen their salaries rise by 12.5 percent since 2008 to $25,400. Occupational therapists are earning $67,800, reflecting a 7 percent increase. Pharmacists are earning 7.3 percent more than they did two years ago, $110,500, while physician assistants are earning 10.3 percent more, $88,800. Physical therapists have seen an increase of 6 percent since 2008 as they currently earn $72,800, annually. Certified physical therapy assistants currently earn $47,900 per year, a 6.9 percent increase from 2008.
According to the survey, salaries differ by region as staff nurses in the West earn the most, $75,600. This is followed by nurses in the Northeast and Midwest as they earn $67,100 and $57,900, respectively. Staff nurses in the Southeast earn $55,800 per year. Nurses in the South Central earn the least, $55,700 per year, 35.7 percent less than their counterparts in the West.
