Sometimes they’d go as a group for coffee, or some would head to a nearby park, while others would just enjoy an early start to their weekend.

I don’t think there’s a single employee out there that wouldn’t value the free time. And the surprise element of it always kept everyone looking forward to it. Plus, it helped build a more relaxed team culture, showing that I cared about their well-being in a way that went beyond a fancy recognition program.

Those little parties in the break room don’t feel like much, but they really can change the whole dynamic of the day. One way I’ve found to recreate this is actually to order delivery. I’ll send congratulatory flowers, cups of coffee, and other treats to employees who have done well, and occasionally “cater” meals for the whole team this way. The ability to “get through the screen” and physically connect with my team, even at a distance, is really powerful.
