HRO Today Forum Gathers Experts to Debate: Is Outsourcing Good for America?

EDISON, New Jersey / March 20, 2012— In the wake of President Obama’s “Insourcing Forum,” the HRO Today Forum will host an Oxford-style debate on “Is Outsourcing Good for America?” The debate will take place on the second day of the sixth annual HRO Today Forum & Workforce Congress in Washington, D.C., April 30-May 2.

The debate topic underscores the primary theme of this year’s Forum: job creation. The pro-outsourcing team consists of Dan Griswold, formerly of the Cato Institute and now president of the National Association of Foreign-Trade Zones and Daniel J. Ikenson, Director of the Cato Institute’s Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies. Thea Lee, Deputy Chief of Staff to AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka and the union’s former Chief International Economist and David A. Andelman, editor of World Policy Journal, comprise the anti-outsourcing team. Terry Moran, co-anchor of ABC News’ “Nightline,” will moderate the debate.

“Does globalization create or kill economic growth? ” asked Richard Crespin, president of SharedXpertise and chairman of the HRO Today Forum. “That’s the central question at the heart of this debate: how to create net-new economic growth and a more competitive workforce.”

Dan Griswold is the author of the Cato Institute book “Mad about Trade: Why Main Street America Should Embrace Globalization.” Since his tenure began at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C. in 1997, Griswold has written articles for major newspapers, appeared on CNBC, C-SPAN, CNN, PBS, and Fox News, and testified before House and Senate committees.

Dan Ikenson is director of Cato’s Herbert A. Stiefel Center for Trade Policy Studies, focusing on WTO disputes, regional trade agreements, U.S.-China trade issues, steel and textile trade policies, and antidumping reform. Ikenson is the author of many studies and articles and is the coauthor of Antidumping Exposed: The Devilish Details of Unfair Trade Law. He has appeared on The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, CNN, CNBC, Bloomberg TV, MSNBC, ABC News, and NPR.

Thea Lee is Deputy Chief of Staff to ALF-CIO president Trumka, where she also served as Policy Director and Chief International Economist. She is co-author of “A Field Guide to the Global Economy.” Her research projects include reports on the North American Free Trade Agreement, on the impact of international trade on U.S. wage inequality, and on the domestic steel and textile industries.

David A. Andelman has been a journalist and bureau chief around the world. He has written for such publications as Harpers, The Atlantic, The New Republic, The New York Times Magazine, Foreign Policy and Foreign Affairs. His third and latest book is “A Shattered Peace: Versailles 1919 and the Price We Pay Today.”

Terry Moran was named co-anchor of ABC News’ “Nightline” in October 2005 and is based in Washington, D.C. In 2008, Moran traveled across the country chronicling the rise of Sen. Barack Obama and interviewing him. Moran also interviewed and covered the campaigns of Senator Joe Biden, Senator John McCain, Senator John Edwards, former Governor Mitt Romney, former Governor Mike Huckabee and Governor Bill Richardson.
