Promote Employee Assistance Program

One of the biggest things I’ve focused on at Rowland Hall this past year is getting people to actually use our Employee Assistance Program (EAP). It’s one of the most underutilized benefits out there, yet it can be a lifeline. I know firsthand—-I’ve used it for legal advice when my house flooded, for support after losing a family member, and even to bring in a grief counselor when a coworker passed away unexpectedly. Employees are facing real-life challenges every day, and if we’re not making support easy and accessible, we’re failing them.

That’s why I’ve been actively pushing our EAP, because having resources isn’t enough if no one feels comfortable using them. An unused benefit is like a locked first-aid kit; it doesn’t help anyone. Well-being isn’t just about work-life balance; it’s about real support when life gets messy. And when employees have that? They’re not just better workers; they’re healthier, happier people. And that benefits everyone.

Holistic Approach to Employee Well-Being

I realize that well-being is multifaceted and needs to be part of the corporate culture to make a meaningful impact. Embed Renewal Rituals

The best organizations today have embraced the concept of renewal—as in how to help employees create rituals that offer them the ability to downshift from the high performance/productivity zone into a space that fills up their reservoir of energy and emotional resilience. It’s been proven that once we move into the yellow and red zones (aka burnout)—it is virtually impossible to get back to productivity without a reset. So rather than allow this dangerous cycle to occur, the best organizations prioritize and embed renewal rituals into the day-to-day of each collaborator (employee).

Renewal rituals are things like having walking meetings instead of sitting at your desk, eliminating 30 and 60 minute meetings in favor of 20 and 50 minute sessions to create buffer space throughout the day, encouraging exercise at the start, midpoint, and end of each day, blocking emails after business hours, starting meetings with boxed breathing, etc. Individually these activities might not move the needle, but collectively, a little can go a very long way. And when employees avoid burnout they stay productive for far longer which sustains both personal and company-wide results.
