Today’s college students are confronted with the toughest job market since the Great Depression, according to Nicole Cox, Chief Recruitment Officer of Decision Toolbox, a nationwide provider of project based hiring and on-demand Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO).
“They face an uncertain economic outlook, rising student loans and stiff competition for entry level jobs from fellow college grads and even experienced workers. The reality is, it takes strategic thinking to prepare for professional life after college, and a plan of action that starts long before that graduation deadline looms,” says Cox.
Cox recently shared her wisdom garnered from 16+ years in recruiting with college students participating in the Tiger Woods Foundation. The session’s aim was to empower these students with the information they need to prepare themselves to be successful in the job hunt.
Cox’s presentation covered the following:
– Understanding the current job market and challenges
– Researching their chosen field for employment opportunities before they commit to the major
– Gaining outside the classroom experience (including internships and volunteer work)
– Interviewing skills
– The importance of networking
– Understanding what employers are looking for culturally in addition to knowledge, competence, skill and attitude.
