Employees Are Dissatisfied with Career Development in Most Organizations – New Research from HR.com

Only three out of ten HR professionals think employees in their organizations are satisfied with the career development opportunities available to them, according to a new report released by HR.com. Moreover, only about a third of organizations offer career development opportunities to all employees to a high degree.

This newly released research report, Accelerating Career Development, is based on an industry survey by HR.com, in partnership with BambooHR, a leading provider of HR technology for small and medium-sized businesses. It includes responses from 964 HR professionals.

“HR needs to play catch-up in this crucial area,” said Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Employers badly need more highly skilled employees, and employees badly want greater career development. Workers know if they don’t develop their skills, they can easily be left behind and become unemployable. So, it’s in everyone’s interest, but career development is still a work in progress for most employers.”

Only a quarter of respondents agreed that their career development programs and practices are top-notch. Even fewer described their programs as highly consistent, efficient, or effective. Although most employers with career development programs review the skills and competencies of employees, only about half discuss possible future career options with them.

Study results reveal what organizations that excel at career development do differently. For one thing, their leaders are much more likely to have the skills required to help employees develop their careers. For another, they tend to use career development metrics such as percent of open positions filled from inside the organization and percent of employees who express satisfaction with development opportunities.
