HR and L&D leaders are strongly positioned to address the inadequate skills development cited as a significant barrier to digital transformation
BOSTON and AURORA, Ontario – December 4, 2018 – HR.com and SumTotal Systems, a Skillsoft company, today announced the results of joint research that demonstrates learning and talent development are crucial for digital transformation. The majority of the 434 human resources (HR) professionals surveyed indicate that digital transformation is an executive-level initiative, but only about one-third say their organizations have made progress with it.
The research report, The Role of Learning in Digital Transformation, investigates how today’s HR professionals view and facilitate digital transformation in their organization and the factors that contribute to or hinder its development. Digital transformation is defined in this study as “the concept of integrating technology into all areas of the business to effectively keep up in today’s ever-changing digital economy.”
The report provides the following insights and analysis:
· Assesses the current state of digital transformation
· Explores whether organizations are prioritizing digital transformation
· Determines the significant enablers of digital transformation and the barriers to achieving digital maturity
· Examines the cultural foundations of digital transformation and their impact
· Explores ways HR and L&D can enable digital transformation
“HR, L&D departments, and formal strategies for learning will be the key drivers of successful digital transformation,” stated Debbie McGrath, Chief Instigator and CEO of HR.com. “Organizations without these foundational elements in place won’t get far on their digital transformation journey.”
The research revealed three major areas where successful organizations considered to be digital leaders differ from other companies:
They are actively taking steps towards digitalization to be competitive and successful.
They realize the value of people as the primary movers of digital transformation.
They place more importance on employees’ development in critical thinking, leadership, and innovation than on automation.
“Talent development is pivotal for long-term success and an absolute business imperative amidst rapid and continual transformations due to the pace of technology advances and innovation,” said Chad Gaydos, chief operating officer, SumTotal. “As validated by HR.com’s research, people development must be the single most important priority for HR and L&D professionals in 2019 and beyond as organizations seek to digitize and transform their business–starting with their human capital.”
