Oct. 26, 2010 — Washington, D.C. — President Obama has issued a statement expressing his administration’s support of advancing work-life effectiveness across the country. In the statement issued by the White House on October 25, 2010, the President stated that “National Work and Family Month serves as a reminder to all of us, especially working caregivers, their families, and their employers, that while we have made great strides as a nation to adopt more flexible policies in the workplace, there’s more we can do.”
WorldatWork and Alliance for Work-Life Progress (AWLP), sponsors of the campaign, encourage all organizations to commit to creating healthier and more flexible workplaces. “We are pleased that the Administration is committed to doing its part in advancing work-life effectiveness across the country,” said Anne Ruddy, president of WorldatWork.
Earlier this month, the United States Senate passed the resolution officially designating October as National Work and Family Month. Under AWLP’s leadership, October was first designated as National Work and Family Month by a resolution of the U.S. Senate in 2003. On September 27, 2010, the Senate again passed S. Res 618, the National Work and Family Month resolution. The effort was led by Senators Blanche Lincoln (D-AR) and Michael Crapo (R-ID). Other co-sponsors this year were Senators Susan Collins (R-ME), Chris Dodd (D-CT), Johnny Isakson (R-GA), Herb Kohl (D-WI), Mary Landrieu (D-LA), Jeff Merkeley (D-OR), and Patty Murray (D-WA).
The House of Representatives reaffirmed the National Work and Family Month Resolution in 2008. This year, Reps. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Todd Platts (R-PA), led the effort with support from, among others, Rep. George Miller (D-CA), Chairman of the Education and Labor Committee.
